That’s when someone dumps a bucket of ice water on himself or herself and then challenges others to do the same, or make a donation to fight ALS, also known as Lou Gehrigh’s Disease. In this case, Gates accepted the challenge from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Gates has his own special take on the ice bucket task, of course.

Those designers got a little help from Microsoft last week when they announced a deadline for support of any version of IE before the current IE 11. After January 12, 2016, only the most recent version of Internet Explorer available for a supported operating system will receive technical support and security updates, Roger Capriotti, Director of Internet Explorer, wrote on Microsofts IEBlog. The company touts benefits for users staying up-to-date with the latest software, but moving away from old versions of Internet Explorer has some giant implications for designers. Heres how Capriotti describes it: Older browsers may not support modern Web standards, so browser fragmentation is a problem for Web site developers. Yeah, thats a bit of an understatement.

At one point, the government tried to split the tech giant in half, but eventually withdrew the demand. Microsoft also lost an antitrust case in the European Union in 2004. It spent the following eight years appealing the case, resulting in a slight reduction of the fine to 860 million ($1.15 billion) in 2012. In both cases, the accusations were similar — that Microsoft abused its market-leading position by bundling its own software like Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player into Windows. The new accusations in China are more nebulous.
